FAQ’s

Is This for All Services, or Specifically Sports Performance?

A movement screen is useful for all services! It is not specific to individuals looking to improve sports performance, but rather any individual who is interested in or who has been referred to physical therapy for further treatment. We do indeed help improve sports performance for many individuals, but the movement screen is suitable for anyone wondering if physical therapy can help their condition.

Hive treats a variety of physical therapy conditions as well as pelvic floor conditions, but we always want to have our patients feel welcome and confident when receiving our services. Our movement screen allows you to get familiar with Hive and our providers, find out if physical therapy is suitable for your needs, and what your treatment process may look like!

What is Involved in The Screening?

As mentioned previously, you will come into a Hive office, see our space, meet a provider, and share your concerns. You and a provider will discuss your symptoms, which will be followed by a brief movement assessment. This assessment can include specific movements such as squats, muscle activation patterns as well as palpation, and strength testing.

The movement assessment is not a test of skill or ability—it just allows the provider to better understand your condition! Your provider will look for any limitations or imbalances you may be experiencing and share their findings with you. Your provider will also share what treatments they deem suitable for your condition, and what aspects could be assessed further in future sessions to create a more comprehensive plan of care.

What is The Difference Between a Movement Screen and Evaluation?

A movement screen is not an evaluation. It is an opportunity for you to meet a physical therapist, share what you are struggling with, and have the therapist briefly screen your area of concern—which may include having you perform movements, assessing your strength or range of motion, and then discussing how physical therapy can help with your problem. It is an optional step that can help you decide if you want to work with Hive and get started with treatment; if so, the evaluation will come next.

An evaluation is a more thorough process that takes place once you officially decide to pursue physical therapy. It requires filling out intake forms prior to your appointment, which your provider will review before seeing you. During the appointment, the provider takes you through an extensive evaluation and moves into treatment. You will walk away with tangible things such as behavioral modifications and exercises that you will do on your own between sessions.

Will I Receive Any Treatment or Exercises?
No, this is a time to ask all of your questions, ensure you are comfortable with the provider, and help you feel good about the decision to move forward with physical therapy. During the movement screen, your provider will take the time to share what treatments you can expect, should you move forward with a physical therapy evaluation.
Do I Really Need a Movement Screen?

A movement screen is suggested for patients who may be unsure or who have questions about treatment. This can be someone who needs treatment, but is unsure if physical therapy is something that can help. Or, perhaps you know you need physical therapy, but are still trying to decide on a clinic. Movement screens provide a starting place for you and your provider. You can bring in your concerns and questions, and allow us to talk you through on how we can help.

If you are confident that you want to receive physical therapy with Hive Therapy and Wellness, you can skip this step and just schedule a full evaluation instead! Schedule an appointment online, or feel free to contact us! Jumping right into an evaluation is the fastest way to get started, but we are happy to schedule a movement screen for those who need to have questions answered first!

Is There Anything I Should Prepare for My Movement Screen?

You should have:

  1. An idea of what your questions are for the provider,
  2. A general sense of what your primary concern is,
  3. An edited version of your medical history pertaining to the current problem, condition, or goal.

It is surprising how fast 20 minutes can go, so the more prepared you are, the more you will get out of the movement screen.

What Should I Wear?
It is best to wear loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move comfortably and fully. Non-restrictive clothing will allow your provider to observe your range of motion and strength and if need be access the area in question. Since this is an abbreviated session the more quickly you can access these areas the more you will get out of this session.
Who Would Benefit From a Movement Screen?

Movement screens are great for people who are on the fence. Consider these questions to see if it could be a good fit for you:

  • Are you not sure about a particular provider?
  • Are you nervous that the clinic may not feel accessible or right for you?
  • Are you worried you will waste your time working with someone who really doesn’t know what is going on with you?
  • Have you experienced failed medical treatments in the past?
  • Are you unsure if physical therapy is the right fit for you, because you don’t even think or know if you have things to work on?
  • Did a provider or friend tell you that you have to be seen for your ongoing concern?
  • Are you unsure if physical therapy can actually help your condition?

These are all people who should come in for a movement screen! We get it, because we have heard all of these questions before. We are here to be your trusted health partner, and we are not here to sell you something that isn’t going to work—that is not what we are about. This is a great low-cost, low-commitment opportunity to address any concerns and set you up on the path for success that you deserve.
